SOLD-OUT FOOD INDUSTRY SHOW HAS GREEN CREDENTIALS
When the Asia-Pacific region’s most innovative food manufacturing industry exhibition kicks off in July this year, for exhibitors, the environment will be at the top of the agenda.
More than 280 Australian and international companies will exhibit their wares at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre for foodpro 2008, showcasing the latest technology and food processing solutions with a strong environmental focus.
Exhibitors will have a range of water-saving solutions on show, from environmentally friendly dry-running pumps to water-efficient spray nozzles and water-saving wash-down equipment as well as systems to reduce water and trade waste operating costs in the food and beverage industry.
Sustainable packaging will also be a focus with paper products made from sugar cane, reeds and straw fibres, along with biodegradable plastic products, ranging from food packaging to disposable tableware and a wide rage of eco-friendly bags.
Mr Peter Petherick, Group Exhibition Manager for Australia’s premier food industry event, said the “sold-out” show was expected to attract more than 9,000 people. Held every three years, the event drew a crowd of more than 8,500 in 2005.
“We have exhibitors covering some 18,000m² – or almost 4.5 acres – of exhibition space in four halls of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. They will be exhibiting not only the latest solutions available today, but previewing new products in development,” he said. “Many exhibitors regard foodpro as the ideal place to release new products.”
Mr Petherick said most the exhibitors were aware of the importance of environmentally-friendly products given the current global situation. “Taking a green approach is an essential factor of successful companies in today’s environmentally conscious world,” he said. “More companies than ever before are proving that economic benefits do go hand in hand with environmental concerns.”

WATER-WISE SOLUTIONS SHOWCASED AT FOODPRO 2008
During the ongoing severe drought the message to the Australian food and beverage manufacturing sector has been hammered home: “This is a sector that is particularly exposed to water-related risks.”
Much of the sector relies on irrigated agriculture for many important inputs, and water scarcity in key production areas could lead to higher prices for grain, meat, and other inputs. However, measures to reduce water demand or recycle waste water at the plant or company level can offset this to make a real difference to the manufacturer’s bottom line.
Foodpro 2008 will feature a range of exhibitors offering water-wise processing solutions. Water-saving specialists Spray Nozzle Engineering will exhibit their
water efficient spray nozzles, water saving washdown equipment, trigger gun nozzle systems and patented tank cleaning nozzles. “A lot of water is used during activities such as cleaning, sanitising, washdown, cooling, quenching and dust suppression. We can help companies save water during these processes with our systems,” Susanne Madsen said. Spray Nozzle Engineering will be at stand 5032 at foodpro 2008.
Acqua Separators specialises in reducing water and trade waste operating costs in the food and beverage industry. It designs and installs innovative systems to treat waste-water streams, enables water reuse, and also recovers ‘in-process’ product, using patented and proprietary technologies.
Acqua director Brett Salisbury said Acqua had the ability to test their systems on site. “This allows you to trial the technology and measure its effectiveness before making any capital commitment.
“What also differentiates Acqua is our ability to treat very difficult (or highly contaminated) waste streams such as those that cannot be disposed to sewer, but must be collected and transported off site,” he said.
“Our range of unique treatment systems enables manufacturers to treat these streams in a way that enables disposal to sewer, thereby delivering operational efficiency, significant cost savings and strong return on investment.”
Visit Acqua Separators at stand 6110 during foodpro 2008, which runs from Monday July 21 to Thursday July 24, 2008, at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

FROM FARM TO FORK, TRACEABILITY IS KEY
The safety of the food chain, from farm to fork, is uppermost in consumers’ minds thanks to serious public health threats such as bird flu and mad cow disease (Bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE).
Traceability now permeates every step of the food chain. Every ingredient, every formula and every manufacturing process has to be trackable and accounted for.
Foodpro 2008 will showcase leading-edge examples of international and Australian food traceability solutions in Sydney in July.
The four-day event, held once every three years, will shine the spotlight on the freshest and most dynamic ideas, technology and developments within the food manufacturing industry.
Sastek, a supply chain solutions provider for the red meat, poultry, smallgoods, seafood, processing and perishable food industries will demonstrate how they use RFID to track products in and out of processes such as smoking, cooking and defrosting. Sastek’s Gavin Hall said: “We can deliver complete traceability from the farm to the supermarket shelves and massively improve production efficiency.”
The powerful Accuweigh AST X-Ray food inspection system can also be seen in action at foodpro 2008. This new system has an on-board database which connects to a computer via a Blue Tooth connection. Data from up to 10,000 tests can be stored for traceability.
South Australian company SI Instruments will showcase their non-destructive leak detection system for rigid or flexible packaging. “Most of our product range is used for ongoing checking of the quality of manufactured products. With this system, even small leaks of only 10 μm can be detected,” SI Instruments’ Eric St.Martins said.
DTS Food Laboratories will feature its testing services in microbiology, chemistry and nutrition at the expo. Paul Bellchambers, of DTS Food Laboratories, said the company’s services benefited the food industry through supporting food manufacturers’ Risk Management and Quality Assurance programs.
foodpro 2008 will span four halls of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre and a major highlight will be its co-location with the industry’s principal conference featuring advances in food science. The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Incorporated will host its 41st Annual AIFST Convention discussing the theme - Our Food Our Future.
foodpro 2008 will run from Monday July 21 to Thursday July 24 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour. To learn more about foodpro 2008, visit www.foodproexh.com, email foodpro@dmgworldmedia.com.au or phone Peter Petherick from dmg world media on +61 3 8420 5402.

FLOORING MANUFACTURERS PLAY IT SAFE AT FOODPRO 2008
Technology continues to take giant leaps for mankind, but simply stopping people from taking a tumble as they go about their work can be somewhat trickier.
Altro Safety Flooring, a pioneer in safety flooring, will showcase safety flooring for food processing areas, kitchens and laboratories at foodpro 2008 in Sydney in July.
Warwick Duncan, of Altro Safety Flooring, said Altro had the largest range of vinyl safety flooring in Australia, covering every slip resistance level from R10 to R12. Altro Safety Flooring is used extensively throughout Australia in hospitality, health and aged care, education, retail, government, transport facilities, as well as domestic housing.
Specialist flooring firm Flowcrete will demonstrate its Flowfresh range at foodpro 2008. The only system of its kind in Australia, the Flowfresh range harnesses the natural power of silver. A unique compound, known as Polygiene, is locked into the resin matrix of Flowfresh floors, providing anti-microbial protection around the clock and remaining active throughout the lifetime of the flooring system.
Flowcrete Australia regional manager Sean Tinsley said a special additive in Polygiene emits ions of silver, which continuously migrate to the surface to suppress microbial growth. The system is effective against a range of bacteria including E.Coli, Staphyloccoccus Aureus, MRSA, Salmonella Typhi, Streptococcus Pyogenes and SARS, he said.
Leading construction materials company, BASF Construction Chemicals Australia, will demonstrate a non-slip version of its unique flooring product, UCRETE®.
Marketed under the banner UCRETE® DP, the flooring system, already gaining widespread acclaim for its outstanding strength and non-slip performance characteristics, is touted as one of the most significant advances in worker occupational, health and safety in the food and beverage industries for many years.
Brendan Mullen, of BASF, said workplace slip hazards were a major concern for many companies – especially throughout the food and beverage processing industries.
“In the past, when it came to selecting a floor for these difficult environments, it has often been a matter of ‘trading off’ between long-term durability, ease of cleaning or non-slip finish,” he said. “Now we are able to offer a floor that meets both criteria – delivering the best of both worlds.”
foodpro 2008 will span four halls of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre showcasing every aspect of the food processing industry, from food packaging and the meat industry to food processing equipment, additives, ingredients, testing equipment, water treatment, pumps and ancillary equipment.
A major highlight of foodpro 2008 will be its co-location with the industry’s principal conference featuring advances in food science. The Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Incorporated will host its 41st Annual AIFST Convention discussing the theme - Our Food Our Future.

HIGH-TECH PACKAGING A HIGHLIGHT OF FOODPRO EXPO
The packaging industry is turning to technology to provide customers with more efficient, cost effective and environmentally products. These innovative packaging solutions will be a highlight of foodpro 2008 in Sydney in July.
Multivac, a world leader in automated packaging systems serving a range of international industries, will demonstrate the flagship of a new generation of thermoform packaging machines, the R 535. The first of its kind seen in the industry the R 535 features a clean-in-place automatic system which cleans both the inside and outside of the machine.
“The R 535 will set new standards for hygiene, process stability, precision, performance and total efficiency,” Multivac said.
Leaders in the materials handling Ozkor will showcase the ExPal 1140 export pallet and the Ozpal 1165 heavy-duty production pallet. Ken Scanlon, of Ozkor, said plastic options were the way of the future.
“Plastic materials handling is more hygienic, durable and easier to clean than timber alternatives,” he said. “They do not absorb and retain harmful bacteria. When it comes to exporting, the adoption of plastic reusable pallets shows an international trend towards a desire by many countries to reduce the dependence on timber.”

BIGGEST FOODPRO EVER NEARS SELL OUT.
Foodpro 2008 promises to be the largest, most prestigious, high profile trade event for the food and beverage manufacturing industry in the Asia Pacific region. It will be staged once again at Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, 21 – 24 July 2008.
Foodpro 2008 will open a day later than usual to avoid the traffic chaos expected during the Pope’s visit to Sydney in mid-July. Eight months before the show, however, anticipation is already building, with 95% of the 18,000m² – or almost 4.5 acres – of exhibition space snapped up by November and a complete sell out ensured by Christmas.
Spanning four halls of the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, foodpro 2008 will host close to 300 suppliers of the food and beverage sectors. Included in the list of industry leaders set to showcase their products and services at foodpro are; Food Processing Equipment, Vemag, Kerry Ingredients, Heat & Control and Cryovac, The Interfood Group, Amcor, TNA and Visy. Hall 3 will house food packaging and the meat industry, while Hall 4 will feature food processing equipment. Halls 5 and 6 will display additives, ingredients, testing equipment, water treatment, pumps and ancillary equipment.
The most recent foodpro held in 2005 was attended by a record crowd of more than 8,500 visitors. Among them was Clive Morris of the Bestlan Group.
“I have been to international trade shows and this is the first foodpro I have attended and have found it to be very impressive,” he said of the 2005 event. “The quality of exhibitors is great, especially in regards to the engineering and safety products.”
Exhibition organiser, Peter Petherick of dmg world media, says that not only will the event have its largest exhibitor numbers ever, expect attendances at the four-day trade show to swell again in 2008. The who’s who of the industry will be in attendance not only on the exhibition floor but in the flood of visitors.
“We’re conservatively predicting 9,000 people will come to foodpro 2008 but won’t be surprised if we get close to cracking the 10,000 mark,” Mr Petherick said. “foodpro grows every time it’s held, which has a lot to do with the fact that there are always new things to see. Staged every three years, foodpro dovetails with research and development cycles and many exhibitors regard it as the ideal place to release new products.”
Aside from exploring all the latest food processing machinery, packaging and ingredients the event features a myriad of food manufacturing products only assembled every three years. Mr Petherick said foodpro 2008 visitors could take advantage of the trade show’s co-location with the industry’s principal conference to catch up with advances in food science. Discussing the theme of - Our Food our Future - the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Incorporated will hold its 41st Annual AIFST Convention during foodpro 2008.

Date Change For foodpro 2008
We wish to advise that foodpro’s show dates have changed and will now be Monday 21st to Thursday 24th July 2008.
This change has been bought about because of World Youth Week which includes the Papal visit, this event will take place in Sydney from Tuesday 15th to Sunday 20th July, 2008.
Many activities will be staged during this period at locations throughout the City including Darling Harbour that will attract many hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Australia and around the world.
Foodpro has traditionally opened on Sunday but the culmination of World Youth Week will be the Papal Mass, this will be held Sunday 20th July at Randwick Racecourse. An expected audience of 400,000 people will attend with a further 200,000 gathered at Centennial Park. The Mass is expected to finish at 12 noon with the majority of people descending back into the city and Darling Harbour. It is anticipated that road closures will be enforced restricting vehicle access.
We have met with the organisers of World Youth Week and the NSW Government, after great deliberation we believe changing foodpro’s dates is the best course of action to protect our exhibitors and visitors of foodpro, which is Australia’s iconic food manufacturing event.
To alleviate problems preceding the opening of the show we have arranged an extra day for the move in and will circulate a detailed hall by hall move in schedule plan closer to the event.
Our preferred Travel agent, The Lido Group have already reserved blocks of accommodation at various hotels surrounding Darling Harbour. Visit our website www.foodproexh.com or call 1800 817 339 Toll free within Australia for further information. We suggest you act on this ASAP and secure your staff accommodation during foodpro. Also it would be in your best interest to check airline travel to avoid the influx of visitors to the Youth Week activities.
This will be a testing but exciting time for the city of Sydney as organisers estimate an Olympic type crowd and we have taken these measures to make sure that foodpro has limited disruption. Our partners the AIFST have also taken measures for their delegates over this period.
Foodpro is nearing a sell out and we will begin our marketing campaign shortly to advise the Australasian Food Industry of the date change. This event has continued to exceed expections each time it has been staged and our objective is to make sure that trend contin
